Lesson 1: Poetry, Please

6.Type of lesson: New Lesson   
7.Teaching procedures:
Step 1. Free talket students talk about the week and the date. They can describe the current weather.
Step 2. Presentation Ask students some questions.
Did you enjoy the vacation?   
What was one of the most interesting things you did during the vacation?
Did you get any chance to do any reading in English during the vacation?   
(If yes) What did you read?
Do you like poetry? Have you written poetry in Chinese?
Is it hard? Why or why not?
What kind of poetry do you like best?
Step 3. Listening and reading
1. Listen to the tape and answer the question:What kind of poetry is Jenny going to write? Why?
   2. Play the audiotape. Have the class follow along in their texts.
Step 4. Discussing
Divide the class into small groups. Ask each group to discuss the reading, using as much English as possible. Ask the students to discuss Danny’s poem “The Donut”.
Language points
1. I haven’t decided what to write about.我还没有决定写什么。
①decide to do sth. 决心做某事e.g.She’s decided to say no. 她决心表示不同意。
②decide that...     e.g.She’s decided that she will say no.
③decide whether...  We haven’t decided whether we will go there.
④decide+疑问词+to do sth.      
We have decided how to go there.
make up one’s mind(to do sth)下决心(做)和decide to do可以替换
e.g.He decides to go with me.------------He makes his mind to go with me
2. That’s what I did in my poem.我在诗中正是这样做的。
What I did in my poem在句中和系动词is构成系表结构,是表语从句,用陈述语序。
e.g. That’s what he said
3. I described something I love.我描写了我喜欢的东西。
I love是省略了关系代词that的定语从句,限制修饰不定代词something。当先行词是不定代词some thing时,关系代词只用that,不用which。     
E.g.There is something that you can do for me.
4. Have you finished already?你已经完成了?
already一般用在肯定句中,用于一般疑问句中表示惊讶。
例:Have they left already?他们已经离开了?(原以为还没有)
5. I know it by heart.我背下来了。
know...by heart(learn...by heart)背诵,可以用recite替换。
e.g. I know/learn the song by heart====I recite the song.
6. Looks like the surprised, pleased circle of my mouth.
看起来像我吃惊,高兴时张开的嘴。
look like... 看起来像…… look是系词. E.g. It looks like a bird.
smell, sound, feel, taste也都是系词,可以和like连用,意为闻起来像……,听起来像……,感觉像……,尝起来像……
e.g It smells good.             The fish tastes delicious.
Step 5. Let’s Do It
Discuss the question with a partner: which is more difficult to understand, English poetry or Chinese poetry?
You may begin with one of these phrases:
Chinese / English poetry is harder/easier, because…
I prefer Chinese/English poetry, because…
Step 6. Homework:
1. Revise the vocabulary words in this lesson.
2. Read the poem “The Donut” and try to recite it.
Summary:
The students more little of the English, so that the teacher provides them more information about the English poetry is very necessary. We can use the Internet to help us. The teacher should stimulate the students’ interests about the English poetry. The students can have more time to search more information on the Internet after class.
