Unit 1 How do you study for a test? 文化背景知识介绍
广东省教育厅教研室
The majority of middle schools in the United States are public schools, and education through high school is obligatory. Therefore, there are no qualifying examinations to enter middle school. Admission to a middle school depends upon the residence of the student. If the student resides within the school district, the student can attend the school. The parents of the student are required to enroll the student into the school. Enrollment can either be done at the school itself or at the school district office, depending on the policy of the school district. Public education in the United States is free, and parents do not pay tuition.

It's over three years since I began to learn English. I am glad that I am getting on well with it.
I find English very interesting, but quite difficult. When I first started, I thought I had only to remember the new words and learn some grammar. I know little about English idioms(习语). I thought each English word had a word with the same meaning in Chinese. When I learned to say "I see a book on the desk", I thought the English word "see" was just like the Chinese word "kan". So one day when my teacher asked me, "What are you doing?" I answered, "I'm seeing a book." "That's wrong," the teacher said. "You don't see a book. You read a book. You can't use an English word like a Chinese one. Be sure not to make the same mistake again."
After that I began to pay more attention to the differences between Chinese and English. For example, in English we say a "high mountain", but a "tall man". In Chinese we use the same word "gao" for both. Again in English we say "take part in the sports meeting", "attend a meeting" and "join the army", while in Chinese we can use "can jia" for all the three. It's interesting, isn't it? So to study English doesn't only mean hard work, it can be great fun, too! We not only have to pay attention to pronunciation, grammar, spelling and handwriting, we also have to understand English idioms. We can learn English well only in that way!
But all this is only a beginning and I still have a long way to go. I'll try my best and work even harder than before. I must speak and listen to English more both in and out of class. I must read and write more, too. I must learn English well so that I can work well when I grow up.

In Britain you're allowed to drive a car when you're seventeen. You have to get a special two-year driving license before you can start. When you're learning, someone with a full license always has to be in the car with you because you aren't allowed to drive the car on the road alone. You don't have to go to a driving school --- a friend can teach you. The person with you isn't allowed to take money for the lesson he's got a teacher's license.
Before you're allowed to have a full license, you have to take a driving test. You can take a test in your own car, but it has to be fit for the road. In the test you have to drive round for about half an hour and then answer a few questions. If you don't pass the test, you're allowed to take it again a few weeks later if you want to. In 1970 a woman passed her fortieth test after 212 driving lessons! When you've passed your test, you don't have to take it again, and you're allowed to go on driving as long as you like. Britain's oldest driver was a man who drove in 1974 at the age of 100.
Before 1904 everyone was allowed to drive, even children. Then from 1904 car drivers had to have a license. But they didn't have to take a test until 1935. On the early days of car driving, before 1878, cars weren't allowed to go faster than four miles an hour, and someone had to lead the car with a red flag.

"Life is speeding up. Everyone is getting unwell."
This may sound like something someone would say today. But in fact, an unknown person who lived in Rome in AD 53 wrote it.
We all love new inventions. They are exciting, amazing and can even change our li1ves.
But have all these developments really improved the quality of our lives?
Picture this. You're rushing to finish your homework on the computer. Your mobile phone rings; a QQ message from your friend appears on the screen; the noise from the television is getting louder and louder. Suddenly the computer goes blank and you lose all your work. Now you have to stay up all night to get it done. How happy do you feel?
Inventions have sped up our lives so much that they often leave us feeling stressed and tired. Why do you think people who live far away from noisy cities, who have no telephones, no cars, not even any electricity often seem to be happier? Perhaps it's because they live simpler lives.
One family in the UK went "back in time" to see what life was like without all the inventions we have today. The grandparents, with their daughter, and grandsons Benjamin, 10, and Thomas, 7, spent nine weeks in a 1940s house. They had no washing machine, microwave, computer or mobile phones.
The grandmother, Lyn, said, "The more things you have, the more difficult life becomes." The boys said they fought less. Probably, they said, because there was less to fight over, such as their computer. Benjamin also noticed that his grandmother had changed from being a "Trendy, beer-drinking granny, to one who cooked things."

Boy Scouts
The Boy Scouts began in 1907 with the ideas of Robert Baden-Powell, a British soldier. Baden-Powell wrote a book for British soldiers about how to live and survive in the wilds of nature. When he found out that many British boys were reading it, he rewrote the book to teach boys about nature skills. He tested his ideas by inviting a group of 22 boys to camp out on an island for several days to learn about nature. This camp was the beginning of the scouts we know today.
Today, there are many different Boy Scout groups around the world, with about 25 million boys. The main purposes of the group are to teach boys to respect and serve God, their country and other people, to be independent from wrong influences, and to be responsible for themselves and their own good character. Their promise and law is "duty to God and country," and their motto is "Be Prepared." They believe that they should do good to others without expecting any reward.

Unit 6 I like music that I can dance to. 文化背景知识介绍
广东省教育厅教研室
Where Did Hip Hop Come From?
Hip hop is a kind of popular music that started in New York City in the early 1970s. In disco clubs, DJs needed to keep music playing between each song so people could dance. They began to mix parts of the song that was playing with the next song, using a heavy drum beat to tie it together. This became very popular because of the treat rhythm. People looked forward to that part so they could dance even more. Very soon, the DJs began to use a drum machine so they could develop their mix of songs more and even make up some of their own music. To keep the audience excited, an MC would speak between the songs, to introduce the DJ, tell jokes, or tell stories. This practice was the beginning of rap, which is used in today's hip hop music a lot. Hip hop music today usually has one or more rappers talking and sometimes singing above a heavy rhythm.

The exact origin of April Fool's Day is uncertain, but the possible origin may be from France. In France, the celebration of the new year used to begin on March 25th and finish on April 1. In 1582, a new calendar was introduced (the Gregorian calendar), and New Year's Day was changed to January 1st. For many years, however, many people still celebrated New Year's Day on April 1st instead of on January 1st. They did not know about the new calendar, so they were called "fools" by the people who followed the new modern calendar.

Unit 11 Could you please tell me where the restrooms are? 文化背景知识介绍
广东省教育厅教研室
In the United States, a toilet is the white porcelain device, which is located in a restroom or bathroom. In a typical home in the US, the toilet is located in the same room as the bathtub or shower. Therefore, in a home, people often ask to use the bathroom when they intend to use the toilet. In public, the toilet is not located in a room with a shower or bath, so people usually ask to use the restroom, but sometimes they ask to use the bathroom. In either case, it is understood that they want to use the toilet.
In Britain, it is common to ask to use the toilet, W.C. (water closet), or loo.

Unit 15 We're trying to save the manatees! 文化背景知识介绍
广东省教育厅教研室
Greenpeace --- history and current work
Greenpeace is an international organization that works to protect the environment. It tries to stop major environmental problems by showing them to the world and also by directly stopping the companies or organizations that are involved in the problem.
Greenpeace started in 1971 in Canada. Its first action was to try to stop a nuclear test that the US government was doing on a small island in Alaska. A group of volunteers took a small boat up to Alaska, but they were stopped and forced to return to land. The nuclear test went on, but future nuclear tests on that island were stopped.
Greenpeace has continued to try to stop nuclear testing around the world. It also tries to stop things like whaling, dumping toxic waste into the oceans, and more. They succeeded in having Antarctica made into a world park, which is a place that no country can call its own. Greenpeace hopes that through its work, the world will solve its environmental problems and have a green and peaceful future.
