Greeting

Good moringing, ladies and gentlemen. I’me very glad to stand here to talk about some of my teaching ideas. The topic is the third period of Unit 8 Have you read read Treasure Island yet? It is the textbook go for it for Junior middle school students. I’d like to say it from seven parts as follow. They are curriculum standards, the teaching material analysis, students analysis, learning goals, task assessment, teaching procedures and the blackboard design.

Part 1 Curriculum standards

First, let’s come into the first part Curriculum sandards. If we want to design the lessons well, we must learn about the curriculum standards. The type of this lesson is reading. So I will mainly talk about it from reading. As the students of Grade 8, they should reach level 4.

1.     can read the passage fluntly.

2.     can understand the order of the event and the behavior of character.

3.     can get the related imformation and the main idea of the passage.

4.     can guess the meaning of the words according to the text.

As for speaking, can descripe others’ experience with the help of the teachers or the pictures.

Part 2 Teaching material analysis

After learning about curriculum standards, let’s come into the second part – teaching material analysis. It is the third period of the Unit8, this lesson is a reading passage, it is a passage based on Robinson Crusoe. Most of the Ss have read the book in Chinese, so it is easy to arouse the Ss’ learning interests. I think the key points are the sentences about the present perfect tense and the difficult point is to retell the passage.

How to make the Ss master the key point and the difficult point. We know that English is a kind of language. Output can be very well only by fully imput, so in my class. I’ll design some activities from easy to difficult. Lead the Ss master the passage step by step.

Part 3 students analysis

Next, I’ll talk about our students. As we all know, our students’ English is not very good, especially in our school. The average score is just about 40. that is too bad for us. So in my class, I’ll intergrate the teahcing matrials and teach students in the most straightforward way. The students have mastered the present perfect tense in the first two period. They understand some words and simple sentences. So it will  be easy for them to learn paragraph 1.

Part4 teaching goals

according to the curriculum standards, teaching material analysis and the students analysis, I’ll set three goals.

Goals1 By the end of the class, the Ss will be able to learn some reading skills –skimming and scanning.

Goal2 the Ss will be able to get the main idea of the passage.

Goal3 the Ss will be able to retell the story according to some key words.

Part5 Task assessment

According to the reading goals, I’d like to talk about Task assessment.

Activity I answer the two questions, learn to skim the passage.

Activity 2 scan the passage, finish 3b.

After these activities, the Ss will reach Goal 1.

Activity 3 read the paragraph 1 carefully, fill in the tables

Activity 4 Read paragraph 2 carefully, answer the four questions.

After these two activities, the ss will read Goal 2.

Activity5 retell the story, according to the key words.

After the activity, the Ss will reach Goals 3.

Part 6 Teaching procedures analysis

I’ll mainly talk about the teaching procedures analysis. It will consists of 8 steps.

Step1 warm up and lead in

Before our class, I’ll play an English song for the students. It will attract the students interests and make our class more relaxing.

After greeting, I’ll lead in this topic by free talk. Begin like this: we know that April 23rd is World Book Day. Have you read today? What books have you read? I’ll ask some students to show their answers. Then tell them: as teenagers, we should read classics as much as possible. This step can make the students review the present perfect tense and meanwhile encourage them to read more books.

Step 2 presentation.

Today let’s go into a classical class together. First, I’ll show the Ss a short video about Robinson Crusoe. Then ask them what is it about. Some students can tell us it is about a man living alone on the lonely island for 28 years. During that time, he saved another man who he named Friday. Then I will also tell something about the writer.

This step can make the student learn something about the Robinson simply.

Step3 look at the two questions

1.     what does Robinson Crusoe wait for?

2.     why does Robinson Crusoe can the man Friday.

Before reading, I will tell the Ss just look quickly through a piece of writing, not every word. This is called skimming, then I’ll give the Ss 1 minute to finish. This step can make the Ss learn one of the reading skills—skimming.

Step4 read the passage again, finish 3b.

Also, I’ll tell the student to read quickly with the questions. It is called scanning. It is another important teading skills.

In this step, I’ll give them two minutes to find the answers. They can also ask their partner for help, then check the correct answers.

In this step, the Ss can also learn to work with others.

Step5 read the paragraph 1, fill in the tables.

What kind of things has Robinson done?

1.     found th ship

2.     …

3.     …

In this paragraph, the present perfect tense is the main structure. When they fill in the blanks, they will also learn the paragraph.

Step6 read paragraph 2 carefully, answer the questions.

1.     a few weeks ago, what did he found on the land?

2.     who else is on his island?

3.     what did the cannibals want to do?

4.     what did Robinson Crusoe do?

I’ll give the ss three minutes to finish them, then find ss to write the answer on the blackbord.

After they answer the questions, they will also understand the paragraph 2.

Step7 retell the story according to tables and the answers.

I think it will be a little difficult for them, so I will let the student say one sentence by one sentence. Then one paragraph by one paragraph. Then together. Then let them retell in their groups.

It is difficult to retell a story, but if they retell it according to the tables and key words, that will be easier for them.

Step8 correct the sentences on 3c

I think it will be easier for them to do it. This step can check if the students understand this passage.

Step9 have a discussion

If you lived on the island alone. what would you do? Have a discussion in your group.

This step can make the students learn to how to face the danger and never give up. Tell them we should learn from Robinson Crusoe. So wen can learn a lot of knowledge from reading. We can end up our class with the old sayings. Life is limited. We can’t decide the length of our life, but we can expand the width of our life through reading.

Let’s enjoy reading, enjoy thinking, enjoy learning and enjoy life. The step can return to the begin of our class

  Have you read …. Today?

  Let’s read every day

Step10 homework

1.     retell the passage after class.

2.     read classics as much as possible.

This is all of my teaching procedures.

Thanks for listening!
